Honda prelude vtec issues.....?

the vtec on my prelude has started to play up. sometimes it does not kick in and some times it kicks in further up the rev range and then again sometimes it kicks in fine and then cuts out! the oil pressure light has come on once or twice, could this have something to do with the problem? would appreciate any advice b4 i have honda look at it as they will charge me a fortune :( thanks
