8 month old wakes up in the night for feed?

I have got so much conflicting information about night feeding. I have started my baby on solids but he still wakes up in the night for feed around 2-30 am and then every hour....feeding him does not work bec he wakes up more frequently each day i..give him water when he wakes up but he cries and takes 30 mins to fall asleep...I comfort him by patting him every 10 mins until he falls asleep...not sure is this the right thing to do any advise...pls
