What is this freaking obsession with Siberian Huskies?

Everywhere I look people are saying "I want one and I have to have one". I see someone new every day with one in our city centre and our park, usually being bodily dragged along or shouting at it to come back. What makes people buy such a high-energy, working breed as a family pet or a house-dog?
